A robust summer-growing annual plant usually found on creekbeds, river flats or moist flood prone areas.
The plant can invade pastures and cultivation, attains a height of 2 metres.
The alternate broad-lobed leaves are on coarse-ribbed branches.
The fruit ripens into a spiny burr 2 cm long and is densely beset with hooked spines and terminal beaks at the end.
The species is toxic to livestock and can cause dermatitus and injury to both humans and livestock.
