A perennial plant, with up to 6 metre long hookspined canes, capable of forming new plants where the cane tips contact the ground.
The crowns of the plant form new canes each year and two year old canes bear white or pink flowers of at their ends which develop into black succulent fruit.
The plant is widely spread by birds and animals and causes problems in forests, creeks and along riverbanks and roadsides.
Stock carrying capacity is severely reduced due to the rambling nature of the plant.
